The CISH is composed of National Committees of historians, of International Affiliated Organisations and individual members.
By uniting these institutions and individuals, it aims to promote the historical sciences worldwide and foster dialogue among its members.

The National Committees are the associations representing the interests of all historical research institutions at the country level.

Internal Commissions
The status of Internal Commission gives the possibility to newly founded International Associations of Historians devoted to the execution of scholarly projects or the organisation of specific scholarly gatherings to be admitted to the CISH before requesting the official status of International affiliated Organisations.
The status is limited to a period not exceeding ten years. By 2026, there are 5 Internal Commissions within the CISH.

The CISH Solidarity Fund is a contribution for colleagues from countries in economic difficulty in order to enable them to participate in the CISH activities. The contribution to the CISH Solidarity Fund is voluntary.
The Treasurer sends out the invoices to the members annually.
Contributions are to be paid in Swiss francs or in its equivalent in a foreign currency after having received the official invoice.
