• ICHR Special Research Projects 2009-2010
In pursuance of the aims and objectives of the Council as enshrined in the Memorandum of Association (MoA), the ICHR has initiated many prestigious Special Research Projects of National and International significance such as Towards Freedom Project; Documents on Economic History of British Rule in India, 1858-1947; Dictionary of Social Economic and Administrative Terms; The 1857 Project and the Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle (1857-1947). During the year under report substantiate progress has been made. The details of which is given below:
1. (I) Towards Freedom Project
The following volumes were brought out:
1. Towards Freedom: Documents on the Movement for Independence in India-1940, Part I, Edited by Professor K.N. Panikkar
2. Towards Freedom: Documents on the Movement for Independence in India-1941, Part I, Edited by Dr. Amit K. Gupta and Professor Arjun Dev
1 (II) Work on the finalization of Part 2 of the volumes for 1940 and 1941 was taken up.
1 (III) A meeting of the Editorial Board of the Project was held on 19 March 2010. The meeting reviewed the progress of the work on remaining volumes, viz; volumes for 1942 and 1947. The support required by the Editors of these volumes to complete the remaining part of their work was approved.
2. Documents on Economic History of British Rule in India, 1858-1947
The project was conceived in April 1992 to compile and publish series volumes affecting the economic life of India during the British Rule: 1858-1947 on the themes of:
Documents on Population; Prices and Wages; Agriculture; Irrigation, Tenancy, Rent and Settlement; Famines; Exchange and Currency; Banking, Credit and Capital Movement; Railways; Tariffs and Fiscal Policies; Handicraft Industries; Modern Industries; Mines; Plantation; Foreign Trade and Tributes; Condition of Life; National Per Capita Income and Debts.
The above project is being executed under the General Editorship of Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi, Director of Development of Studies, Kolkata, and Professor Arun Bandopadhyaya as Joint Editor and Dr. Bhubanes Misra as Editor of Railway Volumes. So far the Council has published volumes IV on Railway Construction and Acts and one volume on Document on Economic History entitled Eastern India Volume I, Part I. It is further added that part II of volume I, is slated for the release during the 70th session of the Indian History Congress which is going to be held from 15th May, 2010 in Delhi University, Delhi.
3. Dictionary of Social, Economic and Administrative Terms in Indian/South Asian Inscriptions
The Council had taken up a Major Project on Dictionary of Social, Economic and Administrative Terms in Indian/South Asian Inscriptions which has made very good progress during the period under report. Approximately, 5000 cards have been computerized in Delhi up to 31 March 2010 for the volume pertaining to North Indian Inscriptions which is being done under the Editorship of Professor K.M. Shrimali. Dr K. V. Ramesh, Main Editor, for South Indian Inscriptions has sent the draft manuscript of volume I of the Dictionary pertaining to South Indian Inscriptions. Aligarh Unit, which is being looked after by Professor Irfan Habib, as an honorary General Editor has also made satisfactory progress in the volume pertaining to Arabic, Persian and Urdu Inscriptions and expected to submit the volume by the end of this year. The Main Editors of the respective volumes have presented their reports before the meeting of the Editorial Committee of the Dictionary Project held on 22 February 2010 which was also approved by the last Research Projects Committee held on 10 May 2010 and also by the Council.
4. The 1857 Project
During the period under report the activities relating to 1857 Project were remained confined to the completion of the projects assigned to various scholars and departments earlier and consolidation of the activities undertaken. The second part of the proceedings of International Conference on Historiography on 1857 held in December, 2006 was processed and sent for publication. The work to release the balance grant-in-aid earlier sanctioned to the various departments also continued.

The Council engaged the services of Professor Iqbal Hussain (Aligarh) on the 1857 Project for translating and editing various proclamations of the rebels. He has prepared manuscript entitled Proclamations of the Rebels of 1857, to the Council, which has been checked and updated by Professor Irfan Habib. The press-copy is made ready for publication and the project is complete. The Council also plans to bring out Hindi and Urdu editions of the Proclamations of 1857. |

The Research Project on European Responses to the Rebellion in India assigned to Professor Shaswati Mazumdar, Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. The work is completed. |

A project to select and compile the source materials relating to 1857 Revolt from the State Archives of Bengal has been entrusted to Professor Basudev Chattopadhyay, Calcutta University, Kolkata. Due to the sad demise of Professor Chattopadhyaya the project remained incomplete. Efforts are being made to reactivate the project or to retrieve the grant released earlier. |

Second Volume of the Rethinking 1857, based upon the proceedings of the International Conference on the Historiography of 1857 is under publication and is likely to be released very soon. |

The Council decided to reprint S.A.A. Rizvi’s 5 volumes entitled Freedom Struggle in Uttar Pradesh, procured from Directorate of Publicity & Information, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. Steps have been taken to assign the reprinting to the publishers. |

During the period under report, the ICHR organised two major events relating to the Exhibition on 1857 |

U.P. Govt. Museum, Jhansi, Deptt. of Culture, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh has organised the Exhibition on 1857, prepared by ICHR and will continue this for 03 months. |

The Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai has given a permanent gallery to ICHR in the Centre for installation of the Exhibition on 1857. The inauguration of the Exhibition was held on November 13, 2009, followed by a lecture on Nehru & 1857, delivered by Prof. S. Bhattacharya the Chairman, ICHR. It was presided over by Prof. (Retd.) J.V. Naik, Mumbai. The lecture was attended along with others by Mr. Satish Sahney, the Secretary, Nehru Centre, Mr. I.M. Qadri, the Member of the Board of the Centre, Dr. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary, ICHR, Shri Shabi Ahmad, Consultant (OSD) and Incharge 1857 Project, Prof. T.R. Ghoble, Member, ICHR, Prof. Rubi Maloni, Mumbai and many other prominent residents of Mumbai and faculty members and students of University of Mumbai. |

Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle (1857 – 1947) |

The project was initiated by the National Implementation Committee for the implementation of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the uprising of 1857 and 60 years of India’s independence. The ICHR accepted the execution of the project at the request of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The duration of the project is for three years with an estimated budget of Rs. 1, 87, 28,000/-. |

The meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Project entitled: Preparation of National Register of Martyrs was held on 11 May 2009. In this meeting the Committee agreed that the title of the volume to be complied could be Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle (1857-1947). It was decided that the organizational structure of the project will consist of (a) Central Team led by a Coordinator of the project, (b) Zonal Committees at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi, (c) State level Committees (based in State archives) led by Coordinators. The Monitoring Committee agreed that the Chairman, ICHR will be the General Editor, ex-officio of the volumes. |

On 17 July 2009 the Chairman, ICHR wrote to the Directors of State Archives seeking their cooperation and for other required facilities to the Research Scholars in the collection of data. |

The meeting of the Central Advisory Committee of the "Martyrs" Project was held on 19 August 2009. In this meeting it was reported that a Central Team of three Research/Editorial Assistants, and two Data Entry-cum-Computer Typists had been appointed. |

The Committee suggested that at Zonal level, Zonal Committee should be formed under the guidance of one Coordinator who should be given the responsibility to collect material from Archives and secondary sources of the regions and verify its historicity and after verification he should send them to the Central Research Team for further processing of the material. Accordingly, the Committee identified certain Zonal and State level Coordinators. |

The Project In-charge, Dr. S.M. Mishra, Deputy Director (R) alongwith the Central Research team visited the National Archives of India (New Delhi) to get the initial information about the available Archival Records. Dr. Pramod Mehra, Assistant Director (Publication, Records, Exhibition), NAI (New Delhi) very kindly provided information about the available records and guidance as to their access in this connection. |

The Central Research Team consulted the primary as well as secondary sources from NAI, NMML and Delhi State Archives during the months of July, August and September, 2009. |

The meeting of the Northern Zonal Committee was held on 15 October 2009. The action taken by the Central Research Team was projected to this meeting. It was also decided to include West Punjab and North West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan) with the Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh regions on the West Punjab and North West Frontier regions, the sources / information available in India would be consulted and collected. |

In the month of October, November and December 2009 the Central Research Team visited Haryana State Archives, Panchkula, Patiala, Chandigarh, Shimla and Amritsar. |

1. In the month of January and February 2010 the Central Research Team had a relook at the collected records and edited the biographical notes with references, under the overall guidance of the General Editor & Chairman, ICHR, Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya. |

The meeting of the Central Advisory Committee & Northern Zonal Advisory Committee held on 22 February 2010 was informed that the complied and edited work of the Martyrs project entitled, Dictionary of Martyrs: India’s Freedom Struggle (1857-1947): Vol. I, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Himanchal Pradesh (1857-1919), Part I was ready for the press. |

The Central Research Team visited the Haryana State Archives (Panchkula) and Punjab State Archives (Chandigarh and Patiala) from 16.03.2010 to 30.03.2010 and consulted / collected the relevant information from archival and non-archival records / sources for Vol. I, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Himanchal Pradesh (1920-1947), Part II of the Project. |

• ICHR Special Research Projects 2009-2010
A. Exhibition of Archival images of the Pre-Colonial and Colonial Bangalore
On the occasion of Bi-Centenary year of the establishment of British Cantonment at Bangalore, the SRC organised an Exhibition of old and rare archival sources of Bangalore under the title Exhibition of Archival Images of the Pre-Colonial and Colonial Bangalore during the period 22 August – 5 September 2009.
Professor U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnanapitha Awardee and former President of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, inaugurated the exhibition on 22nd August 2009. The function was Chaired by Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya. Some members of the Council of ICHR (Professors F.A. Qadri, J.S. Jaiswal, N. Rajendran) and Dr. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary, also attended the programme.
Professors M. Jamuna and B. Surendra Rao presented papers on Colonialism: British policy towards native states in the pre-independence period. Over 4000 people visited the exhibition. Several colleges, research institutes and local public lauded the efforts of SRC in organizing the exhibition on such a big scale.
The exhibition was indeed a grand success with a number of popular dailies prominence to this event.
The Valedictory Session of the Exhibition programme was held on 5 September 2009 during the course of which the following two lectures on Colonial Bangalore were organised.

B. The Exhibition on 1857 was organised at the following places:

The lecture was attended by prominent personalities including Mr. Satish Sahney, the Secretary, Nehru Centre and Mr. I.M. Qadri, the members of the Board of the Centre. The Centre has given a permanent gallery to ICHR for installation of Exhibition on 1857. |
C. The ICHR organised a 21 day course on Research Methodology during 24 August to 13 September 2009 at Bharathidasan University, Department of History, Tiruchirapalli. The course was a grand success and was recognized by the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Council (TANSCHE) at par with the UGC recommended Refresher Course. It is expected that elsewhere a similar recognition will follow. Apart from this the ICHR has organised and funded Research Methodology Course in its Southern Regional Centre, Bangalore, North-East Regional Centre, Guwahati, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and the University of Calcutta, Kolkata.
• Special Lectures, Talks Organized 2009-2010
The Special lecture series programme started by the ICHR in 2007 aims at bringing scholars, particularly young historians whose work merits attention, to this forum in the premises of the ICHR. This programme, apart from the teachers and researchers who attend these lectures, also benefits the officers and staff of ICHR to get exposure to academic discourse beyond the routine processing of files. Under this programme the following lectures were organised during the year 2009-10.

Professor (Ms.) Waltraud Ernst, Professor of History of Medicine, 1700-2000, Oxford Brooks University, UK, spoke on the Crossing the Boundaries of British Colonial Psychiatry: Nationalism, Transnationalism and Scientific Culture on 6 August 2009. |

Professor Lakshmi Subramanian, Coordinator, Indian Ocean Studies Programme, Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, spoke on the Veena Dhannamal: The Making of a Legend on 29 October 2009. |

Professor B.R. Tomlinson of London University, delivered lecture on 7 December 2009 at the Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi on Maulana Azad Memorial Lecture organised by ICHR. |

Professor Eugenia Vanina, Head, History and Culture Section, Centre for Indian Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow spoke on the theme on Medieval Mindset in India: The Perception of Man, on 28 January 2010. |
• Library-Cum-Documentation Centre 2009-2010, Member of Delnet and Jstor 2009-2010
The Library cum Documentation centre of the ICHR has over the years developed into a fairly large and well-informed reference library. It is well equipped with books and other reference material on Indian history and allied streams. It has a collection of approximately 68,000 books and journals and regularly subscribes to approximately 100 foreign and Indian journals/periodicals.
The Library purchased about 440 books published in the last year largely on Indian history and allied disciplines, including reference books and books relating to the history of Asia and neighbouring countries. We have received about 91 books as complimentary and the library received 88 M. Phil / Ph. D Thesis/Dissertations etc from Grants in –Aid Units of the Council, which are collected by various units under various financial grants.
The library underwent a major renovation in this financial year. The library has developed fully Air Conditioned reading room and computer terminals for providing Complete congenial environment to the scholars.
Micrographics is an indispensable part of information technology for better management of Library and Information Services. The Library has recently revived its Microfilming Unit and has added a Kodak Microfilm reader and scanner which has the facility of printing the image both in A3 and A4 size also it has the facility to save the image in PDF and TIFF format. The Unit is now fully functional and provides facilities for Computer-Assisted Retrieval (CAR) of information from the microfilmed documents.
The library is subscribing JSTOR. It is an electronic source of more than 400+ journals spread across 13 academic disciplines with full text from starting issue of the journal. Also the Library cum Documentation Centre is a member of the DELNET (Delhi Library Networking) which promote sharing of resources among the libraries by developing a network of libraries, by collecting storing and disseminating information and by also offering Inter Library Loan services.
The library has been providing Xerox copies of academic reference to the scholars on demand at a nominal rate of Fifty Paisa - per double page normal size. About 22000 (appox) exposures 2009-2010 were delivered to the scholars for their research requirement with complete satisfactory report.
The reading room of ICHR Library is kept open from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm on all days, with the exception of Sundays and gazetted holidays. Scholars are welcome to offer suggestions for improvement of the library.
• Activities of the Regional Centres of ICHR 2009-2010
The Council has two regional centres one each functioning at Bangalore and Guwahati. Both the centres have successfully established their reputation as Centre of excellence. The local scholars in the respective regions are happy with the services being provided by both the centres. Both the centres have been actively involved in helping scholars to carry out their researches by providing efficient services and organizing regional and state level seminars. The Southern Regional Centre (SRC), Bangalore, and the North-East Regional Centre (NERC), Guwahati, are headed by Dr S.K. Aruni Asst. Director (Research) and Shri Uttam Bathari Asst. Director (Research) respectively. Details regarding the academic activities performed by both the Regional Centres of ICHR are given below:
A. SOUTHERN REGIONAL CENTRE, BANGALORE
The Southern Regional Centre is actively participating in promoting council’s various research schemes and building-up of library-cum-documentation unit with several new titles, journals, etc. The Centre has also made efforts to promote and publish source books during the reporting period. The details of the academic works under taken by the Southern Regional Centre (SRC) are given below:
EXHIBITION OF ARCHIVAL IMAGES OF THE PRE-COLONIAL AND COLONIAL BANGALORE:
On the occasion of Bi-Centenary year establishment of British Cantonment at Bangalore, the SRC organized an exhibition on old and rare archival sources of Bangalore under the title Exhibition of Archival Images of the Pre-Colonial and Colonial Bangalore. The Inauguration of the Exhibition was held on 22 August 2009 by Professor U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnanapitha Awardee and former President of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. The function was chaired by our Chairman Professor S. Bhattacharya and Council Members- Professors F. A. Qadri, J. S. Jaiswal, N. Rajendran and Member Secretary Dr. Ishrt Alam were attended the programme. Professor M. Jamuna and Professor B. Surendra Rao presented on Colonialism British policy towards native states in pre-independence period. The Exhibition was held from 22 August to 5 September 2009 and the exhibition witnessed a good success as over four thousand visitors have made visited. Several colleges, research institutes and local public have praised about the exhibition. The daily newspapers have carried the exhibition as important event in the city, Bangalore, and covered in their newspapers. The exhibition was great success programme and reached common people about the visual history of Bangalore.
THE VALEDICTORY SESSION OF THE EXHIBITION AND LECTURE PROGRAMME
The Valedictory session of the Exhibition programme was held on 5 August 2009 and following two lectures on Colonial Bangalore were organized.

SEMINAR ON ‘VIJAYANAGARA AND SRI KRISHNADEVARAYA’ [3-4 JAN. 2010]
On the occasion of the 500th year of Coronation of Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara dynasty, Southern Regional Centre of ICHR has organised a special seminar on Viajayanagara and Sri Krishnadevaraya on 3 and 4 Jan. 2010 in Bangalore. Total 16 research papers were presented in the seminar by various scholars invited all over the country.
SPECIAL SESSION
A Special Session was organised on 4 Jan. 2010 and it was addressed by His Excellency, Sri. Hans Raj Bharadwaj, Governor of Karnataka. Dr. N. Prabhu Dev, Vice-Chancellor of Banglaore University was Chief Guest of the programme and our chairman Prof. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, presided over the function. The seminar was attended by over 250 participants including UGC, university teachers, scholars, and research students.
BOOK RELEASE
Following Council’s publications were released by His Excellency, Sri. Hans Raj Bharadwaj, Governor of Karnataka during the Speicial Session of Seminar.

The Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers Volume- III |

The Southern Regional Centre has published the Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers volume-III ed. by Srinivas Ritti & B.R. Gopal in March 2009. The present volume is the third in the series of Kannada inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers prepared under the Inscriptions Programme planned by the ICHR. With this volume part of the Project relating to the volumes of Kannada inscriptions is complete. The present volume contains 148 inscriptions belong to the Aravidu Dynasty of Vijayanagara empire and covers period between 1569 and 1682 A.D. The volume is of 300 pages and it is priced Rs. 500/- [Rupees Five hundred only] and copies are available for sale. |

The Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers Volume- IV [Telugu Inscriptions] Ed. by P.V. Parabrahma Sastry |

The fourth volume of the Vijayanagara dynasty has published by the Southern Regional Centre, Bangalore of ICHR and brought out in December 2009. The present volume contains 580 Telugu inscriptions of the Vijayanagara rulers found across southern India. The volume is of 872 pages and it is priced Rs. 1250/- [Rs. Twelve hundred and fifty only] and copies are available for sale in Southern Regional Centre of ICHR, Bangalore. |
Kannada Translated Books:
The SRC has been assisting to publish the manuscripts of the books under the Translation of well known English History Book in the Indian languages project. In this regard following books are ready for publications and soon they will be published.

LIBRARY-CUM-DOCUMENTATION UNIT:
New Books: The Library Selection Committee in its last meeting recommended important new titles for centre’s library, accordingly the library has purchased. 618 new books these include the Oxford, Orient Black Swan, Cambridge, Rawat, Books for Change, Manohar, Bharatiya Kala Prakashan, Agam Kala, CVG, etc., publications.
Accession of new Books: The library staff took steps to complete the accession work of the newly purchased books and prepared individual book-cards. The library has also took steps to complete the data entry of new books titles, authors and publications details into library software for computer-catalogue.
Journals subscription: The library has also renewed subscription of important journals these include, Studies, in History, South Asia Research, Medieval History, Indian Economic & Social History Review, World Archaeology, Asian Perspectives, Antiquity, Artibus Asia, Pragdhara, ISDA, Journals.
Digital Archival Collections: The Southern Regional Centre has been actively taking steps to build-up digital-archival sources of rare and old publications related to south Indian History from various Web-based sites such as Archives.org Google-books; etc. The digital sources are copied into the CDs and are kept for readers use in the library. During the reporting period a good number of digital books are accessed and kept for library users.
Visitors: The library-cum-documentation unit has been extending reading, reference and consulting services to scholars. About 1150 were visits made by scholars to the library from various universities/institutions on various aspects of historical research. The library has provided 1490 copies of photocopies to scholars and readers.
SALES OF COUNCIL'S PUBLICATIONS:
The SRC has been playing a big role by way of publicizing various research schemes of the ICHR and making available books, journals, Research Funding Rules booklets, CDs on Epigraphia Carnatica, etc.to scholars in the following annual conferences/seminars held in the southern India during the reporting period.

The Centre has sold publications worth of Rs. 55,982/- (Rupees fifty-five thousand nine hundred and eighty two only] in these conferences.
1857 PROJECT:
The Nehru Centre, Mumbai has sent a proposal of permanent displaying of Council’s ‘1857 pictorial collections’ at Mumbai. The SRC was informed to transport and hand over the display materials. The staff members of the SRC visited the Nehru Centre Mumbai in the first week of June 2009 and handed over the set of display materials to the Secretary, Nehru Centre, Mumbai.
CENTENARY VOLUME EDITING WORK:
The Mythic Society of Bangalore requested Dr. S. K. Aruni, Asst. Director (Research) of SRC to select and edit important articles published in Quarterly journal of the Mythic Society [volumes 1-100] on the occasion of Society’s centenary celebration year [1909-2009]. Some thirty articles on archaeological and anthropological studies are edited under title of Gems of Scholarships: Archaeology & Antiquities Selected Articles from QJMS [1909-2009]. The Mythic Society has published the volume and released in its centenary annual function held in May 2009.

Seminar on Doing Ethnohistory in North East India: New Perspectives and Approaches:
The inaugural session of the seminar was held on 18 of February 2010 and academic sessions were held on 19 and 20 of Feb 2010. The inaugural session was chaired by Prof. S Bhattacharya, Chairman, ICHR and key note address was delivered by Prof. B. N. Datta, Former President Assam Sahitya Sabha. Dr. K. A. S. M. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary, ICHR was present in the session. Altogether 32 (thirty two) papers were presented in four sessions. |

Workshop |

A twenty one (21) days workshop was organized by the Centre on Historical Research Methodology from 20 November 2009 to 11 December 2009. The workshop was inaugurated by Professor Ranju Bezbaruah, Dept. of History, Gauhati University and former Honorary Director, ICHR, NERC, Guwahati. Professor Okhil Kr. Medhi, Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University attended the Valedictory function of the workshop on 11 December 2009 as Guest of Honour. The valedictory function was chaired by Dr. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary of ICHR, New Delhi. In the meeting Honorable Vice-Chancellor announced decision of allotting a plot of land to the ICHR for construction of office building of the North-East Regional Centre.
In total thirty (30) number of young teachers/research scholar from various institutions & colleges attended the workshop. Resource persons from variour universities in the region and outside delivered forty eight (48) lectures during the workshop. Besides that there were interactive sessions among the participants where discussions were held on their respective research theses. The participants were also taken to the state museum and state archives to familiarize with archival data. |

Organized on Friday 2 October 2009, the lecture was delivered by Professor Hiren Gohain. The lecture was presided over by Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Chairman, ICHR. Dr. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary of ICHR, New Delhi was also present in the lecture. In total 69 participants attended the lecture. The lecture was organized on the occasion of foundation day of the Centre. |

A felicitation program was organized to honour distinguished historians Professor Amlendu Guha, Professor A.C. Bhuyan and Professor S.K. Barpujari on Friday 2 October 2009 in recognition to their contribution towards the discipline alongside the foundation day lecture by Prof. Hiren Gohain. |
2. Permanent Building of the Centre
The NERC has been functioning since 1997 from the extension building of the K K Handique Library of the Gauhati University. The accommodation has been totally rent free. The Gauhati University has recently consented to provide a plot of land measuring 2.5. bigha at the western end of the campus facing the highway for construction of permanent building of the Centre.
Foundation stone to the same has been laid on 19 February 2010 by Professor Sujit Sikdar, Vice-Chancellor, i/c in presence of Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Chairman, ICHR, Dr. K.A.S.M. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary, ICHR. The programme was attended by several personalities of academic repute.
3. Building up the Library-cum-Documentation Unit:
With a view to build up library of the Centre, several titles have procured. Procurement of books for the Centre has not been restricted to history. Books on other allied science like anthropology, sociology, political science etc. have also been procured keeping the importance on growing need for inter-disciplinary approach. Similarly books on North East along with others also have been made. The following steps have been taken for upgrading the library of the Centre during the period from 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010.

In total 417 nos. books have been purchased for the library of the Centre. In total 05 nos. of journals and one proceedings of XVII Session, 2008 of Indian Art History Congress have been purchased. |

In total 15nos. of books as complimentary and donated copy from different sources have been received by the Centre. |
III. |
In total 29 nos. Census Data (C D form and book form) relating to 2001 Census have been purchased. |
IV. |
A few issues of journals, newsletters and assembly reports from different institutions and scholars also received. |
4. Digitization of library:
The center is continuing with digitization of rare books by means of scanning. Some of these are books out of print. During this period nineteen (19) books have been scanned and digitized.
5. Reproduction of Rare/Unavailable books:
During the period 07 numbers of rare and unavailable books have been collected from different sources and reproduced by means of photocopy for the library of the Centre.

Presided over by Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Chairman, ICHR, the meeting was attended by 8 (eight), members from the department of History of various universities in the region including Professor S.N. Dube & Professor D. R. Syiemlieh, Member, ICHR. Dr. Ishrat Alam, Member Secretary of ICHR also attended the meeting. |

• The Indian Historical Review
The Indian Historical Review, (IHR) is the referred journal being published by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). The journal has served the historian’s community since 1974. It is perhaps the only Journal of its kind in India that has been published continuously for thirty five years. It addresses research interests in all areas of historical studies, ranging from early times to contemporary history. While its focus is on the Indian sub-continent it has carried historical writings on other parts of the world as well. Committed to excellence in scholarship and accessibility in style, IHR welcomes articles which deal with recent advancements in the study of history and discussion of method in relation to empirical research. All articles, including those which are commissioned are independently and confidentially referred. It has been an important means of transmitting results of researches in history. It has won wide recognition for its comprehensive and balanced coverage of different periods, as well as its high academic and editorial standards. The Indian Historical Review carries articles of a general nature though some issues are focused on particular themes. Articles, review articles, book reviews and short notices are its regular features. The Council also obtains the advice and support of the journal’s Advisory Committee, which consists of eminent scholars working in the area of Indian historical studies in India and abroad. Didattica :
• Il Museo Centrale del Risorgimento ha avviato, con la collaborazione della Regione Lazio, per il prossimo anno scolastico 2010-2011 dei laboratori di didattica della storia, da svolgere all’interno dei singoli istituti, che saranno incentrati sulla storia dell’Ottocento e del primo Novecento. Questi laboratori sono modulati mediante un insieme di quattro incontri e una visita guidata esterna. Al termine dei laboratori le classi o gli alunni coinvolti realizzeranno un elaborato e un progetto di ricerca specifico concordato con i singoli docenti. Scritture di Storia. Le fonti per la storia dal Settecento all'Ottocento. Lettere, diari, cronache, manifesti e periodici. I temi proposti per i laboratori didattici per l’anno scolastico 2009-2010 sono:
1. La fotografia come documento storico. Lettura di immagini originali dal 1849 al 1921.
2. I simboli dell'Unità d'Italia. Un percorso attraverso i luoghi della città.
3. La Grande Guerra: 1915-1918. Testimonianze e fonti.
Altre iniziative :
• Medagliere PADOA Prosecuzione del progetto di informatizzazione della schedatura scientifica e della campagna fotografica già eseguita sul Medagliere Padoa (circa 5.000 medaglie risorgimentali) sotto la supervisione della direzione dell’istituto di numismatica della Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici di Roma – Museo Nazionale Romano (palazzo Massimo). Il progetto, coordinato per la Soprintendenza dalla Dott.ssa Bufalini e per il Museo dal Dott. Pizzo, prevede la creazione, entro due anni, di un portale din consultazione dell’intera collezione, la realizzazione di un volume\catalogo e una manifestazione espositiva.
